Smithsonian Marine Station Fellowships

The Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Florida, part of the National Museum of Natural History, offers residential fellowships for marine research through three routes. Short term fellowships are open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers, and pay USD 3,000 per month, with the length agreed between the applicant, the advisor and the station director. Applications require a proposal of at least 1,500 words, a CV, and two letters of recommendation for graduate and postdoctoral applicants. Postdoctoral fellowships run 12 to 24 months and pay USD 62,000 a year plus a health insurance allowance and a research allowance of up to USD 5,000. The postdoctoral tier is open to applicants up to seven years beyond the PhD, and a senior tier is open to those who have held a PhD for at least seven years. Link Foundation and Smithsonian graduate fellowships support 12 weeks of research for graduate students, with station advisors Valerie Paul, Jennifer Sneed and Holly Sweat. All fellows are expected to be in residence at the Marine Station. Research covers Indian River Lagoon ecosystems, seagrass, mangroves, coral reefs and marine microbiology, and prospective applicants should identify a station advisor before applying. The programme is open to applicants from any country, and application materials are submitted in English. Deadlines fall twice a year, on 1 November and 1 May.
