As an off-site satellite event for the Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona, this co-hosted satellite event provided a dynamic platform for participants to engage with leading experts on key topics, and served to illustrate some barriers ECOPs encounter, to discuss these barriers, and then foster collaborative and innovative solutions for positive change; finding entry-points into the science-to-policy interface and the startup market. The co-hosted satellite event “The inclusivity we need for the Ocean we want” aimed to identify the systemic barriers that lead to the exclusion of underrepresented groups and communities, thus preventing inclusivity in ocean conservation and governance. It was exploring this key theme using two lenses (and panels) on geopolitical and inter-sectorial inclusivity. Read and download the report here.

The ECOP Japan report on the Japan National survey was officially released on 1 April 2024, and was given a special preview during the second ECOP Japan Symposium, which was organized on March 7, 2024 by the Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Tokyo, Japan.
ECOP Central America Report 2023-2024
Welcome to the report by the ECOP Programme’s Central America Node, drawing conclusions from the survey carried out during the months of June to October 2023. This was a joint survey among the nodes of Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Brazil to understand the vision, challenges and diversity of ECOPs in Latin America and the Caribbean. The latest ECOP Programme Communications Report provides an overview of the ECOP Programme’s communications tools, engagement and analytics during 2023, charting the substantial growth in audience that has taken place. The report was finalized in January 2024, and released on 12 February 2024, with the aim to inform the future strategy of the ECOP Programme communications department and help develop indicators to monitor success. The report was compiled by Communications Consultant Natalie Fox.
On 30 November 2023, the ECOP Programme released an onboarding handbook for its node coordinators and focal points.
It is a compilation of guidance and protocols, and an incredibly useful resource designed to assist anyone running or looking to set up an ECOP Programme node or thematic hub at the National or Regional level. Read here.
Between January-March 2022, an online survey was conducted by ECOP Africa coordinators, to take stock of the level of engagement and networking among African ECOPs, and draw from that information to establish the ECOP Africa network.
The ECOP Africa survey report gives insight into Early Career Ocean Professionals, their demographics, needs, challenges, strengths and opportunities, as well their willingness to integrate into the ECOP Africa network. It was released on 16 November 2023. Read here.
Released on 20 June 2023, the China Survey Report presents the results of the bilingual ECOP (Chinese/English) survey, which was conducted from 5 November 2022 to 10 January 2023. This survey was designed to assist the ECOP Programme in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the priorities and challenges confronting Chinese ECOPs. The report also provides an update on the progress made in establishing the ECOP China node and was prepared by Chunhua Jiang (ECOP Asia intern) and Raphaël Roman (Regional Coordinator for ECOP Asia).
This report is available in two languages: English and Chinese (中文).
Welcome to our latest report that presents the results of the national ECOP survey for India, and also highlights some progress made towards establishing a prospective national node in the country. The ECOP Programme has compiled this UNOC impact report to chart the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities that we encountered in relation to the UNOC. The conference was considered a key event for the communications team and publicity of the ECOP Programme, and a timely opportunity to connect with peers, mentors and potential funders and partners, after an extended hiatus. From all the information in the report, we have reached four key outcomes, that if addressed, would significantly increase the inclusion and participation of ECOPs at the next UNOC. This summary report provides an overview of the online Incubator 17 event on 25-26 November 2021. The Incubator was organised collectively by ECOPs in Asia to share existing knowledge and past experience of science communication efforts organized in Asia/Western Pacific and its adjacent areas, and to discuss effective ways and technical tools to engage more non-professionals and stakeholders in the UN Decade and WESTPAC communities.
