Introducing ECOP Ghana

The Early Career Ocean Professionals Ghana node is a group of emerging young leaders in the field of ocean science and management in Ghana. The group aims to foster the professional development and networking of early-career ocean scientists and managers from Ghana, West Africa. 

Mission of ECOP Ghana

The Ghana node focuses on supporting and empowering Ghanaian ECOPs through capacity building, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. The network includes individuals from a range of disciplines including marine biology, fisheries management, coastal engineering, and ocean governance, among others. The Ghana node is committed to advancing sustainable ocean development in Ghana and contributing to global efforts to address the challenges facing our oceans today.

Objectives of ECOP Ghana

The primary goal of ECOP Ghana is to enhance the capacities and skills of early career ocean professionals (ECOPs) in Ghana. This initiative aims to empower ECOPs to actively contribute to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on their visible impact at the local and international level.

To achieve this overarching goal, ECOP Ghana sets out the following objectives:

 

    1. Capacity Building: ECOP Ghana aims to provide a comprehensive range of activities that will enhance the knowledge, skills, and competencies of ECOPs in Ghana. These activities may include both short- and long-term training programs, mentorship initiatives, and professional development programs.
    1. Networking and Knowledge Sharing: ECOP Ghana recognizes the importance of networking and knowledge-sharing among ECOPs. Through various platforms and events, such as workshops, conferences, and online forums, ECOP Ghana aims to foster a strong network of ECOPs in Ghana. 
    1. Information and Opportunities: ECOP Ghana aims to provide ECOPs with access to useful information and opportunities related to ocean science and sustainable development. This includes support for ECOPs to engage with international policy events, facilitating their participation in relevant conferences and meetings. ECOP Ghana also intends to establish a match-making service to connect ECOPs with international training programs and other relevant opportunities through call for applications. 

    4. Establish and coordinate a ‘Nature-based solutions hub.

Peter Teye Busumprah

Peter Teye Busumprah is the ECOP Ghana Coordinator and an expert member of the Vision 2030 process endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade for sustainable development coordinated by UNESCO/IOC. Peter is Expert Member of the UN Regular Process for World Ocean Assessment III and He is Affiliated with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development ( Government of Ghana ).

Gabriella Akpah Yeboah

Meet Gabriella Akpah Yeboah, the ECOP Ghana Coordinator and a part of the organizing committee for IMECAN. She is a passionate marine scientist and intrepid explorer, driven by a deep fascination for the secrets hidden within ocean archives. With a keen interest in applying sclerochronology, she navigates the tides of time, unlocking the ancient stories of marine life etched in oyster shells. She has expertise in other marine-related fields, marine plastic pollution, remote sensing, and mycology amongst others. She is currently with the Marine Biogeochemistry working group, and a PhD student at the Department of Marine and Fisheries Science, University of Ghana. 

Iddrisu Seidu

Iddrisu Seidu, ECOP Ghana coordinator is an enthusiastic and focused professional in the field of Fisheries and Aquaculture with over five years of hands-on experience in aquaculture and research. He is committed to contributing to global food security through innovative and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture production, research, and relevant partnerships. Iddrisu is driven by a lifelong aspiration to make important contributions to meeting the nutritional needs of our ever-growing global population. Constantly seeking new opportunities to expand my practical and theoretical knowledge to achieve this goal.

Dr. Mabel Anim

Dr. Mabel Anim is the ECOP Ghana Ocean Literacy Coordinator. She is a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Geography and Regional Planning of the University of Cape Coast. She is a physical geographer with specialty in coastal geomorphology and interested in anything that happens between the land-sea interface. Her research interest is in coastal processes, marine environment, marine debris, coastal erosion and accretion, coastal sedimentology, environmental processes, natural disasters, blue economy, nature-based solutions to ocean-climate change nexus, marine biodiversity conservation, climate change, and geology. .

Curtis Akapini

Curtis Akapini is a dedicated professional with expertise in Marine geospatial and Earth Observation Science. He is currently serving in research at the university of Ghana with focus on marine geospatial technologies and science leveraging on satellite data and Internet of Things. With capacity from the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, and the United Nations Youth Association Ghana he has served as a youth leader and SDG Advocate for many years standing. He is with the objective of bridging science, diplomacy, and social impact for sustainability. Presently serving as the Technology Coordinator for Early Career Ocean Professionals Ghana node, Curtis works towards the advancement of capacity in geospatial technologies for ocean applications in Africa.

Offei-Darko Lord

Offei-Darko Lord is the ECOP Ghana Capacity building lead and the indigenous knowledge coordinator, He is an award-winning Environmental scientist from the University of Ghana with research interests that explore the exciting intersection of Land-sea connectivity with a focus on coastal ecosystem services.
