Introducing ECOP South Korea
Welcome to the National Node page for the South Korean network!
South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, is a nation located on the southern section of the Korean Peninsula, surrounded by three main oceans – the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the East Sea of Korea (also known as the ‘Donghae’). With a larger territorial sea area than land area (almost 4.5 times), South Korea has a strong connection to the ocean that has shaped its history and development.
This rich maritime heritage has driven significant advancements in maritime technology, fisheries, and marine science research. South Korea is home to some of the world’s leading marine research institutions, and its scientists have made significant contributions to our understanding of ocean dynamics, marine ecosystems, and climate change.
ECOP South Korea is a network of Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) in South Korea, composed mainly of young early career experts who are passionate about understanding the ocean for Ocean Sustainability . The expertise of ECOP South Korea’s members spans a broad range of topics, including ocean circulation, biogeochemistry, marine biology, and climate change. With access to state-of-the-art research institutions and facilities, and a supportive scientific community, ECOP South Korea strives to facilitate entry and engagement with the UN Decade of Ocean Science, promote both domestic and international research networks for oceanographic research, and foster an Ocean Sustainability Nexus for researchers and other ocean stakeholders, including local communities.
대한민국은 한반도 남쪽에 위치한 국가로, 황해, 동중국해, 동해로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 영토 면적보다 거의 4.5배나 더 넓은 영해 면적을 가진 대한민국은 바다로 부터 역사적으로 큰 영향을 받아왔습니다.
이러한 풍부한 해양 유산은 선진 해양 기술, 어업 및 해양 과학 연구의 중요한 발전을 이끌어냈습니다. 대한민국은 세계 최고 수준의 해양 연구 기관들 중 일부가 위치하며, 대한민국의 과학자들은 해양 역학, 해양 생태계, 기후 변화 등에 대한 이해를 위한 중요한 연구 성과를 거두고 있습니다.
ECOP South Korea는 대한민국의 신진 해양 종사자들로 구성된 해양 전문가 네트워크입니다. ECOP South Korea 회원들의 연구 주제는 해류, 해양 생지화학, 해양 생물학 및 기후 변화 등 다양합니다. 최신 연구 시설과 지원적인 과학 커뮤니티에 참여할 수 있으며, ECOP South Korea는 UN 해양과학 10년 계획에 참여하고 연구 네트워크를 조성하며, 연구자, 이해관계자 및 지역사회를 위한 해양 지속가능성 구심점 역할을 하는 것을 목표로 합니다.
Goals and Objectives
- Develop mentoring initiatives to prepare the next generation of ocean leaders
- Establish and maintain a national network of ECOPs to promote collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and peer support
- Encourage and facilitate the engagement of early career professionals in the ocean society, providing them with opportunities to present their activities and connect with other professionals and practitioners in the field
- Provide information to ECOPs about career and educational opportunities, events, etc.

Bumsoo Kim 김 범 수
I am an organic geochemist and paleoceanographer (currently Postdoctoral Research Associate at Texas A&M Oceanography) using lipid biomarker (“molecular fossils”) and stable isotope as tools to study Earth's past climate and biogeochemical changes - with the goal of learning lessons for the future. I am thrilled to be part of the UN Ocean Decade and ECOP, and will dedicate myself to fostering a sense of community among early-career professionals and to amplifying the stories and voices of ECOP of South Korea! 김범수: 저는 유기지구화학자이자 고해양학자입니다 (현재 텍사스 A&M 해양학과 박사 후 연구원). 저는 지질 바이오마커와 안정동위원소를 연구 도구로 사용하여 지구의 과거 기후와 생지화학적 변화를 연구하며 미래를 위한 교훈을 얻는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. UN Ocean Decade과 ECOP의 일원이 된 것을 매우 기쁘게 생각하며, 신진해양학자들 사이의 공동체 의식을 함양하고 ECOP-한국의 이야기와 목소리를 증폭시키는데 헌신을 할 것입니다!
Chanhyung Jeon 전 찬 형
I am a physical oceanographer and sea-going scientist. Now I am working at Pusan National University as an assistant professor (tenure-track). I am interested in oceanic variabilities from large to small scale processes such as ocean currents and circulation, eddies, and waves in global oceans over the equatorial to polar oceans. It is an honor to participate in K-ECOP activities with outstanding scientists from South Korea. I will strive to promote the direction of ocean science pursued by the UN Ocean Decade, ensuring that the oceans we utilize today are preserved for future generations. 전찬형: 저는 바다 현장을 누비는 물리해양학자입니다. 현재 부산대학교에서 조교수로 근무하고 있습니다. 저는 적도해양에서부터 극지해양에 이르기까지 해류 및 해수 유동, 중규모 소용돌이, 파와 같은 해양의 크고 작은 물리 현상을 연구하고 있습니다. 훌륭한 우리나라 과학자들과 K-ECOP 활동을 함께할 수 있어 영광입니다. 앞으로 우리가 이용하는 바다가 미래 세대까지 어이질 수 있도록 UN Ocean Decade가 추구하는 해양과학의 방향을 널리 알리고자 노력하고자 합니다.
Minkyoung Kim 김 민 경
I am an ocean biogeochemist and currently working at Kyungpook National University as an assistant professor. By using the radiocarbon and lipid biomarkers, I am trying to obtain insights on carbon and related biogeochemical cycling in global oceans. As a sea-going scientist, I’ve joined in several research expeditions. As an early-career, woman scientist, I am enthusiastically participating in several ECOP activities: I am currently a co-chair of the PICES-AP-ECOP, and the APECS representative of Ross Sea in SOOS (Southern Ocean Observing System). I am very happy to start this exciting activity with K-ECOP! 김민경: 저는 경북대학교 조교수로 근무 중인 해양 생지화학자입니다. 특히 방사성 탄소동위원소와 바이오마커를 사용하여 전 세계 해양의 탄소 및 생지화학 순환을 연구하고 있습니다. PICES 해역뿐만 아니라 북극, 남극, 대서양 등 바다를 직접 탐험하는 과학자로, 다양한 연구 항해에 참여했습니다. 저는 여성 신진과학자로서 현재 PICES AP-ECOP의 공동 의장이며, SOOS (Southern Ocean Observing System)의 Ross Sea 대표로 참여하고 있습니다. 그리고 K-ECOP의 시작을 함께할 수 있어 매우 기쁩니다!
Hyung-Gyu Lim 임 형 규
I am a Senior Research Scientist (tenure-track) recently joining Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) to pursue my research starting in April 2023. My research backgrounds are climate dynamics and oceanography, which are applied to examine the interactions of climate variability with biogeochemistry and plankton dynamics. My current research aims to understand how much of the interannual variance in fisheries production is explained by climate variability at regional and global scales, and how much ecosystem changes are predictable. I’m happy to serve the K-ECOP community and looking forward to seeing wonderful oceanographers and opportunities for better understanding of our ocean through ECOP activities. 임형규: 저는 한국해양과학기술원 선임연구원으로 재직중인 임형규 입니다. 제 연구 분야는 기후 역학과 해양학으로, 이를 활용하여 기후 변동성과 해양생지화학 및 플랑크톤 역학의 상호작용을 연구하고 있습니다. 열대 지역 및 전지구 규모기후 변동성이 해양상위생태계 변동성을 얼마나 설명하는지와 해양생태계 예측성을 평가하는 것입니다. K-ECOP 커뮤니티에 기여하게 되어 기쁘게 생각합니다.ECOP 활동을 통해 우리 바다에 대한 이해를 개선할 수 있는 글로벌 해양학자들과의 만남을 기대합니다.
Jae-Hyoung Park 박재형
I am an early career ocean professional working in Pukyong National University with a strong interest in physical oceanography. As a passionate and driven early career ocean professional, I am committed to developing the next generation of ocean leadership and building a domestic ECOP network. I am willing to dedicate to encouraging and facilitating the engagement of early career professionals in the scientific society, and I actively seek opportunities to share information and collaborate with others in the field. 박재형: 저는 물리 해양학에 많은 관심을 가지고 있는 신진 해양학자입니다. 신진 해양 전문가로서, 저는 다음 세대의 해양 리더십을 개발하고 국내 ECOP 네트워크를 구축하는 것에 노력하고 있습니다. 또한, 저는 해양 소사이어티에서 신진 해양 전문가들의 참여를 촉진하고 지식을 공유하며 해양 분야의 다른 사람들과 협력할 기회 마련하고자 합니다.
Seung-Tae Yoon 윤승태
I am an assistant professor at Kyungpook National University (Department of Oceanography, School of Earth System Sciences). My major is physical oceanography, and I am mainly interested in investigating oceanic responses to climate change through field observations. To briefly introduce my research career, I got a Ph.D. with the research on the long-term variation of heat content and ventilation in the East Sea, and I studied the responses of the Antarctic Ocean to climate change during my PostDoc period at the Korea Polar Research Institute. As climate change is a very important issue not only for us but also for future generations, I hope that there will be more oceanographers who can study and protect the Earth and Ocean together through K-ECOP activities in the future. It is a great honor to be part of K-ECOP. 윤승태: 저는 경북대학교 지구시스템과학부 해양학전공에서 조교수로 재직중인 윤승태입니다. 제 전공은 물리 해양학이며, 해양 현장 관측을 통해 기후변화에 따른 해양의 반응을 연구하는 것에 큰 관심이 있습니다. 저는 2017년 8월 동해의 장기 변화를 주제로 박사 학위를 취득하였고 학위 후부터 2021년 2월까지는 극지연구소에서 박사후 연구원으로 재직하면서 기후변화에 따른 남극해 반응 연구를 수행하였습니다. 기후변화는 우리뿐 아니라 미래 세대에게 매우 중요한 이슈이기
