GAME (Global Approach in Marine Ecology)
GAME (Global Approach in Marine Ecology, previously Global Approach in Modular Experiments) is an internationally established research and training programme in marine ecology based at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany). It was established in 2002 and is dedicated to investigating the effects of global change on marine ecosystems. At the same time, GAME invests specifically in young scientists and promotes international knowledge transfer – especially between industrialized and emerging countries.

Timeline
Thanks to its exchange nature, GAME also combines research with an intensive cultural and social experience for students, two aspects which are essential for a modern science education that aims at inspiring global thinking in young researchers. GAME enables global research and creates the basis for cooperation and international exchange.
Since 2011, a board of trustees comprising representatives from science, politics and the media has been advising GAME. The members of the board, who themselves are enthusiastic about the oceans and marine research, influence the further development of this unique programme and aim to help raise its profile in society.
Impact
GAME is exclusive to GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. For the programme, a unique network of over 40 marine research institutes in more than 30 countries in 6 continents has been established. 56 publications in international peer-reviewed journals attest the quality and the relevance of our research work. So far, 318 students accomplished GAME in more than 20 research projects – of which more than 50 % started a career in science.
