Introducing ECOP Portugal
Building upon Portugal’s rich and extensive history of innovation in ocean exploration, and considering its diversity of ecosystems – from the wild Atlantic cliffs to the vibrant southern estuaries, the renowned waves of Nazaré, and the stunning island landscapes – the ECOP node in Portugal was created to provide a platform for networking, mentorship, and professional development for early-career ocean professionals at the center of the North Atlantic. This initiative promotes the exchange of knowledge and experiences through a multidisciplinary approach, and serves as a bridge between science and society, inspiring the next generation of ocean leaders.
We are here to connect you with ocean advocates and empower you to make a difference in protecting our ONE ocean. From networking events to conservation initiatives.

Who is an ECOP in Portugal?
All Portuguese citizens or residents in Portugal who self-identify as early in their career (10 years or less of professional experience) within any occupation related to the ocean, including unpaid or volunteer positions.
Mission
- #1 – Foster an Ocean Culture: Inspiring and empowering young professionals and future leaders to become advocates for ocean conservation and sustainable practices.
- #2 – Demystify ocean careers: Show that no matter your field, there is a way you can contribute to change and promote a stronger Blue Economy.
- #3 – Foster Diversity and Inclusion: Create a platform that values all backgrounds and types of knowledge, leading to a multi-skilled community with broad minds and innovative approaches.
- #4 – Create an ECOP Blue Network in Portugal: Provide opportunities for cross-generational and cross-backgrounds discussions, share knowledge and experiences, and showcase professional opportunities and other resources.
- #5 – Empower ECOPS through skill-building events: Help ECOPs grow by organizing skill-building events that support their professional growth and development.
- #6 – Promote and support ECOPs to share their work: Foster a sense of communal hope in the face of environmental deterioration by showcasing our collective strength and celebrating successful conservation efforts.
- #7 – Bridge the gap between Science and Policy: facilitate dialogue and showcase the power of evidence-based decision-making. Through these efforts, we can create a robust platform that highlights the importance of science in shaping effective policies and promotes citizen engagement in policy.
Vision
The ECOP Portugal node aims to be a leading hub for early-career ocean professionals in Portugal, creating a spirited and interconnected community that drives innovative solutions for a sustainable ocean. We want to position the Early Career Ocean Professional Node in Portugal as a dynamic and influential force in advancing ocean science and sustainability. By embracing the country’s rich maritime heritage and the diverse ecosystems of the Portuguese coast, the Node will empower the next generation of ocean leaders to address global challenges in local contexts.
