The ECOP Programme is joined (across the international date line) by experienced Polar expedition leader Andreas Marouchos from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).
Andreas knows that observing and understanding the Southern Ocean (or more broadly Polar Regions) presents significant challenges due to remoteness, extreme weather conditions and limited access. His work has spanned a number of domain areas, and in recent years he has focused on the development of marine technologies and observational methods. Autonomy and autonomous platforms and data collection networks show significant promise in addressing the challenges of localisation, persistence and scale associated with Southern Ocean observations and have become a key enabling technology in the future of polar science observations. In this webinar, he will be presenting a vision for a new mix of autonomous observational methods and technologies, using recent case studies as a guide.
