Training Workshop – unlock your ocean data through crowdsourced research with the Zooniverse free DIY Project Builder platform

Zooniverse is the world’s largest platform for online people-powered research, also known as citizen science, enabling the public to meaningfully contribute to real scientific discovery. With a global community of more than 3 million participants, Zooniverse has supported over 500 research projects across disciplines—from classifying distant galaxies to tagging penguins in remote camera-trap images to transcribing historic documents, and more. Collectively, volunteers now contribute more than six million data classifications each month, accelerating research, enabling new discoveries, and advancing science literacy and engagement worldwide. Zooniverse has led to hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and is recognized as a trusted, rigorous infrastructure for crowdsourced science.

I am offering hands-on virtual training workshops for ocean researchers interested in unlocking the potential of their datasets and collaborating with the public through Zooniverse. The workshop will guide participants through our free, do-it-yourself project builder platform, covering how to design tasks to tag, label, annotate, or classify data, from images and audio to text and sensor outputs. We will explore best practices in citizen science and crowdsourced research design, including how to structure tasks for accuracy, build meaningful public engagement pathways, and integrate results into research workflows. Participants will leave ready to launch a project that both advances their science goals and opens doors for communities to engage with ocean discovery and stewardship.
