Fostering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into interdisciplinary marine research
11 October, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Date: Tuesday 11th October 2022 (12-3pm UTC).
Background: Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are increasingly expected to work across various disciplines, and to have skills in several domains, to navigate ocean sustainability challenges. ECRs are well placed to innovate and champion new approaches to addressing critical research priorities. However: do Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) issues affect ECR participation in interdisciplinarity? What challenges or barriers to DEI are there to being an interdisciplinary marine researcher? How can DEI issues be better considered in research practices?
Session overview: Join IMBeR’s Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) for a virtual workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities for progressing DEI in interdisciplinary marine science.
The workshop will begin with invited speakers who will discuss their work into DEI in interdisciplinary research as well as personal experiences. Following this, a series of small breakout groups will allow participants to discuss in greater detail DEI issues and opportunities, focused around three overarching questions:
- What does DEI mean for you and your research community?
- What are the main challenges or barriers to DEI being an interdisciplinary marine researcher?
- How can DEI be better considered or fostered within interdisciplinary marine research?
The session will wrap up with a plenary and broader discussion session. Discussions and insights from this meeting will be integral to help inform IMECaN’s strategic planning for 2022/2023. Additionally, all participants to the workshop will be invited to contribute as co-authors to a perspectives paper that will address the topics discussed at the workshop.
