Learn more about applying for the Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture

You might have seen the recent campaign by EurOcean regarding an amazing opportunity to share your projects and potentially present your work at the IOC-UNESCO assembly in Paris, in June.  To pay homage to Professor Mário Ruivo and his legacy, the IOC-UNESCO, EurOcean and Portugal have opened up the floor to Early Career Ocean Professionals, and we spoke with the Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture Organization Committee to find out more.

Tell us bit more about this opportunity, and why you are targeting ECOPs specifically?

The Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture is an initiative endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade and promoted by IOC-UNESCO, EurOcean and Portugal, which intends to stimulate and recognise Early Career Ocean Professionals, who through their projects, are seriously contributing to United Nations’ 2030 Agenda – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 and to the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Professor Mário Ruivo’s inspiring work and lifelong commitment to ocean science and sustainability, and his foundational contributions to the development of the IOC-UNESCO will be honored through the lecture on the winning project that will be given by the distinguished early career ocean professional during the IOC Assembly in June 2023. It will be the first lecture of this new biennial series. Elevating and strengthening the new generations of ocean professionals is the best tribute to Professor Mário Ruivo’s legacy.

We would love to learn a bit more about Professor Mario Ruivo and why his legacy is the basis for this opportunity?

An expert in Biological Oceanography, Mário Ruivo was one of the pioneers of marine biology in Portugal. He held high political positions (Secretary of State for Fisheries, Minister for Foreign Affairs – 1974/75), and led the Delegation of Portugal to the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (1974-79). Mário Ruivo was the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) from 1980 to 1989, and, later on, the delegate of Portugal to the IOC. His achievements at the IOC reinforced his prestige at the international level. With a deep ethical sense, Mário Ruivo had his eyes set on future generations, and he thereby established a pact of responsibility, which gave him an indefatigable strength to persist and fight for his ideals, without giving up. With the aim of promoting marine science, technology and ocean literacy, he was a crucial element in the creation of the EurOcean Foundation and of its scientific network, of which he was one of its founders and Presidents.

What sort of projects are you hoping will be submitted?

We hope to receive innovative projects that promote an integrated approach to the challenges faced by the Ocean, thus contributing to the vision and mission objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, to the 2030 Agenda, and particularly SDG 14, and aligned with the IOC’s Programme and the Medium-Term Strategy, promoting capacity development and international cooperation.

It is important to highlight that applications are open to projects developed by and authored/led by an Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP), up to 40 years of age completed by the submission date, as the principal investigator (PI) or as a co-PI.

What can the successful ECOP expect from attending the prestigious IOC assembly in Paris?

This is an outstanding opportunity for any Early Career Ocean Professional present her/his Project to all IOC’S 150 Member states and have the recognition of an international scientific committee formed by renowned ocean professionals from different ocean scientific and technology areas.

As ECOPs, we often lack belief in our own work, because of our lack of experience – what would you say to encourage members of our community  – who we know are doing amazing work for the Ocean and the UN Ocean Decade – to trust in their ability and apply?

Every single young ocean professional has power but will not be meaningful if they don’t use it or even try it. The ocean, the planet, the Humanity need the future generations, their minds and innovation to achieve a sustainable future and the ocean we need.
