The crewingAT programme, led by the Office of the Youth in Maritime (YIMO) in the Philippines, advances ocean literacy by embedding sustainability and environmental stewardship into maritime training.
Focused on the next generation of seafarers and maritime professionals, the initiative integrates science-based tools and technologies to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint—addressing issues such as pollution, emissions, and crew safety. It promotes ocean-conscious decision-making while enhancing understanding of the ocean’s critical role in regulating climate, sustaining biodiversity, and supporting global livelihoods.
Through global partnerships, self-paced digital modules, and in-person workshops, crewingAT builds capacity, encourages intergenerational learning, and strengthens inclusive access to maritime careers—especially for women and youth in underprivileged areas.
By aligning with frameworks from UNITAR, IMO, and UNESCO-IOC, the programme also contributes to broader ocean governance goals. crewingAT repositions seafarers as ocean stewards, bridging the gap between maritime operations and sustainable ocean futures.
crewINGAT is an officially-endorsed project under the Blue Thread Initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC) Ocean Literacy Program.
