2026 OAE Research Call for Proposals

Carbon to Sea Initiative has opened two calls for research proposals on ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) as a method of carbon dioxide removal. The first, the Global OAE Field Research Network, offers up to USD 5 million for the exploration, development and coordination of field research sites intended for sustained multi-year use and shared as a resource with the wider research community. It covers four grant types: field site exploration, field site development, field research, and network participation. The second, Targeted Research and Innovation, offers up to USD 1 million across a portfolio of awards, covering sediment additionality, meaning sediment related alkalinity fluxes and their effect on carbon removal claims, and innovation in technologies or methods that improve the production or performance of alkalinity sources. Both calls use a two stage process. Pre-proposals are due 30 September 2026, stage two invitations are issued on 23 October 2026, full proposals are due 15 December 2026, and award decisions follow in February 2027. The call is open to global participation.
