SUMMARY:The AUV Singapore challenge
DESCRIPTION:The SAUVC competition challenges participant teams to build an AUV that can perform given tasks. These tasks are simulations of tasks operational AUVs would have to be able to perform. The competition is held in a swimming pool and each team’s AUV will have to perform 4 tasks. The speed and accuracy at which the AUV performs tasks will be used to decide the winner of the competition.  \nThe tasks involve four widely faced underwater challenges: AUV navigation\, visual identification\, acoustic localization\, and robotic manipulation.

SUMMARY:UN Ocean Decade ECOP Japan Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Ocean Decade) is an international framework for the sustainable use and management of the oceans using ocean science to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) Network Programme is established to empower ECOPs\, who self-identify as being early in their career in any field related to the ocean. The Programme is endorsed by UN Ocean Decade as a network program. \nAt Japan’s first online ECOP symposium held in January 2022\, ECOPs in various fields such as universities\, research institutes\, and NPOs were invited to discuss their current activities\, challenges\, and expectations for the UN Ocean Decade\, with the aim of igniting to build a network of ECOPs in Japan. \nIn response to the issues identified by the previous symposium and subsequent online survey (e.g. funding\, employment\, lack of mentors\, etc.)\, this hybrid symposium invites ECOPs who are engaged to the seven outcomes of the UN Ocean Decade to discuss how they are resolving issues and carrying out their activities\, and to introduce such examples in Japan. In addition\, through the creation of posters related to the seven ocean outcomes\, ECOPs in Japan will recognize issues and solutions across the different sectors\, and will deepen common understanding among ECOPs toward the achievement of the UN Ocean Decade. \n\nThis hybrid symposium will provide a space for Japanese ECOPs to learn more about the seven UN Ocean Decade Outcomes and hear from speakers regarding concrete activities and initiatives related to these outcomes in Japan. In addition\, the ECOP Japan node will unveil a poster illustrating how Japanese ECOPs view the seven outcomes and what they believe should happen under each of them to achieve the ocean we want. This event will offer an opportunity for ECOPs in Japan to recognize issues and solutions across different ocean sectors\, and help deepen a common understanding toward the achievement of the UN Ocean Decade.\n\n\n\nLink in Japanese: https://www.spf.org/opri/event/20240307.html\n\n\nLink in English: https://www.spf.org/opri/en/event/20240307.html

SUMMARY:Call for contributions for a new TBTI book
DESCRIPTION:Since publishing the ‘Fish for Life book in 2005 (Kooiman et al.\, eds.)\, numerous efforts have been made to advance the Interactive Governance (IG) theory and its applications. Some of these efforts have culminated in the 2013 book (Bavinck et al.\, eds.)\, focusing on governability\, and the 2015 book (Jentoft & Chuenpagdee\, eds.)\, focusing on the application of IGT on small-scale fisheries. The literature on IG shows that the theory has been applied globally and widely\, beyond fisheries and oceans. To help celebrate the 20 years since the publication of the Fish for Life book\, and in recognition of the great work by IG scholars around the world\, it is deemed suitable to contemplate the 4th book\, to highlight the progress made in theorizing IG\, to reflect on lessons learned from various applications\, to identify and fill theoretical and application gaps\, and to project areas and spheres where IG theory can have the most real-world impact. \nThe deadline for submission of interest is December 15\, 2023. If you have any questions about this\, please send them to tbti.global@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:2013-2023 | 10 years of the Galway Statement
DESCRIPTION:It is with great pleasure that we announce the forthcoming event: “2013 – 2023: 10 years of the Galway Statement. Celebrating a decade of marine research cooperation along and across the Atlantic Ocean – Our Shared Resource”. \n\n\n\n\nThe event is co-organised by Irish Government\, the European Commission\, the Marine Institute\, and the University of Galway. It will be a hybrid event held in Galway\, Ireland\, on 5-6 July 2023\, bringing together European and international Atlantic partners and actors.\n\nPlease mark your calendars and register through the provided registration link.  Stay tuned for more details about the programme and speakers. We look forward to welcoming you in Galway in July 2023 for this momentous occasion in our All-Atlantic Ocean cooperation.\n\n\n\n\n\nMuch has happened since the Galway Statement was signed in May 2013 between Canada\, the European Union and the United States of America.  More than 1000 research teams have started to map the North Atlantic seabed\, discovered new deep-water volcanoes and species\, studied the effects of deep-sea mining and the changing climate on the biodiversity\, created a network of floating universities\, shared research infrastructures in the Atlantic and Arctic regions\, and much else. These successes have led to a new ocean-scale cooperation\, culminating in the signing of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Declaration in Washington DC.\n\nThis event will also lead the way up towards the 2023 All-Atlantic Forum in South Africa\, and it will interconnect with new strategic mobilisation initiatives that have also been launched in Europe\, such as the Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’\, with its Atlantic and Arctic lighthouse. Furthermore\, it will empower our future Atlantic stewards and ensure that all of these initiatives support the UN Decade of Ocean Science and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

SUMMARY:Ocean Visions Biennial Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Visions Biennial Summit 2023 will be a significant opportunity to advance the sharing of knowledge and solutions to critical challenges at the ocean-climate nexus. \nThe ocean is under threat from a host of pressures\, but none loom larger than those caused by greenhouse gas pollution\, which drives overheating and acidification. Ocean heating is in turn causing deoxygenation\, sea level rise\, and disruption of critical marine ecosystem functions and services. \nIn order to address this ocean-climate crisis\, the world needs to generate and scale innovative solutions much more effectively and quickly. \nSummit participants will share and discuss cutting-edge advancements in ocean sciences\, engineering\, policy\, governance\, and economics that support trajectory-changing solutions to the dangerous climate impacts on the ocean within 7-10 years. \nThe Summit will be held at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta\, Georgia and online everywhere from 4-6 April 2023. We welcome a diversity of solutions-oriented participants\, including scientists\, academics\, policymakers\, entrepreneurs\, those with indigenous knowledge of oceans and solutions\, innovators\, and funders. \nThe conference is designed to be highly interactive with a mix of session types such as plenaries\, lightning presentations\, posters\, and other networking interactions. The conference is structured around five core topical tracks\, which will be addressed through half-day sessions. The tracks are: \n\nOcean-Based Contributions to Global Decarbonization: What are specific solutions and innovations necessary to advance ocean-based contributions to global decarbonization which could include but are not limited to ways to decarbonize shipping; ocean-based renewable energy sources; decarbonizing fisheries and aquaculture; and producing zero or low carbon food (blue foods)?\nOcean-Based Contributions to Carbon Dioxide Removal: How do we advance ocean-based CDR research and development—as well as related enabling conditions related to economic\, policy\, and social aspects\nOcean Ecosystem Regeneration: What interventions have the best chance of slowing\, stopping and ultimately reversing losses to critical ocean ecosystems and functions in the face of climate tipping points?\nHuman Adaptation to a Changing Ocean: How can we develop and advance the array of responses necessary to support human adaptation to a changing ocean\, such as managed retreat\, reinventing coastal ocean livelihoods\, building coastal resilience to dangerous events\, adaptation to sea level rise\, and habitat/species restoration/rewilding.\nBuilding a Global Community of Solvers at the Ocean-Climate Nexus: What are the social and economic innovations required to build a global solutions-oriented community?\n\nAbstract submissions are open until 26 October: https://agu.confex.com/agu/OVS23/prelim.cgi/Home/0 \nMore info: https://www.agu.org/Ocean-Visions-Summit \nIf you are interested in applying to chair sessions within the 5 tracks identified as part of the Summit\, all entries for chair should include a CV\, preferred track and a brief cover letter describing the applicant’s interest and qualifications to run their preferred track. SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:OUR OCEAN\, OUR CONNECTION\nPanama City\, 2-3 March 2023 \nThe ocean is one of humankind’s most valuable resources: home to 80% of all life on Earth\, provider of nourishment for more than 3 billion people\, and a medium for global trade. However\, this vital asset is in danger from global warming\, unsustainable practices\, illegal fishing\, reckless pollution\, and the loss of marine habitats. It is time for all nations to work together to prevent the further destruction of our ocean. Our collective efforts to clean the ocean\, restore climate and regenerate marine life may well be the last stand in a struggle to do away with actions and ways of thinking that cause disruption the lives of all beings that populate our planet. \nOur Ocean 2023 will create a space for collaborative dialogue between heads of state\, private sector\, civil society\, and academic institutions to discuss how we can save our marine resources\, promote sustainable use\, and educate the public about our ocean. \nMost importantly\, we will bring attention to the critical importance of the implementation of well-connected systems of effective area-based management measures\, including Marine Protected Areas\, the development of the global blue economy and proposing innovative solutions to address marine pollution. \nOur Ocean Conference: https://ouroceanpanama2023.gob.pa \nApply for the Our Ocean Youth Leadership summit with Sustainable Ocean Alliance (by 23 November): https://ouroceanpanama2023.gob.pa/how-to-apply/
