SUMMARY:Exploring Ocean Mysteries: From Dynamic Shores to the Deep Sea Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries\, in collaboration with Engaging Every Student\, created 17 educational lesson plans for grades 5-8 (adaptable for grades 4-12) and supporting resources to promote ocean literacy. Even though the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface and life on Earth evolved in and depends on it\, learning about the ocean is often neglected in schools. The National Geographic Society and National Marine Sanctuary Foundation funded this project.  \nSpeakers: Krista Reynolds\, Rick Reynolds\, Tracy Hajduk

SUMMARY:Marine Biodiversity Networking Friday on low-cost technology practices for ocean observation
DESCRIPTION:On April 14th\, 2023\, 1-2:30 PM UTC The AIR Centre\, GeoBON and MBON will have a special session dedicated to the development of low-cost practices and technologies for ocean observation. Science faces an accessibility challenge. Although the information is fast becoming available\, the experience of science is significantly limited. One approach to solving this challenge is to democratize access to scientific tools. \nIn this session\, Lucie Cocquempot is presenting the ongoing work of the OBPS Task Team on “Standard Operating Procedures/Best Practices for Coastal Observations in under-resourced countries\, issues behind low-tech practices and ongoing considerations on the need to share knowledge. Colomban de Vargas and Gérard Zinzindohoué utilizing examples from past work and a community-driven science framework will share a broader vision of building new tools for frugal oceanography.  Anthony Ndah – ECOP Africa coordinator will be moderating.  Learn more here. \nThe Networking Fridays Webinar Series was endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Activity and this is a UN Ocean Decade Event. \nRegister here. \n

SUMMARY:Fostering Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into interdisciplinary marine research
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday 11th October 2022 (12-3pm UTC). \nBackground: Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are increasingly expected to work across various disciplines\, and to have skills in several domains\, to navigate ocean sustainability challenges. ECRs are well placed to innovate and champion new approaches to addressing critical research priorities. However: do Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) issues affect ECR participation in interdisciplinarity? What challenges or barriers to DEI are there to being an interdisciplinary marine researcher? How can DEI issues be better considered in research practices? \nSession overview: Join IMBeR’s Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) for a virtual workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities for progressing DEI in interdisciplinary marine science. \nThe workshop will begin with invited speakers who will discuss their work into DEI in interdisciplinary research as well as personal experiences. Following this\, a series of small breakout groups will allow participants to discuss in greater detail DEI issues and opportunities\, focused around three overarching questions: \n\nWhat does DEI mean for you and your research community?\nWhat are the main challenges or barriers to DEI being an interdisciplinary marine researcher?\nHow can DEI be better considered or fostered within interdisciplinary marine research?\n\nThe session will wrap up with a plenary and broader discussion session. Discussions and insights from this meeting will be integral to help inform IMECaN’s strategic planning for 2022/2023. Additionally\, all participants to the workshop will be invited to contribute as co-authors to a perspectives paper that will address the topics discussed at the workshop. \nRegistration link: \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfVvOTvpGgWU1FYPZJIS6UUkFHyJ8_nKfvD_4uzHNWEarka0Q/viewform

SUMMARY:Working towards a global plastic pollution treaty: Process and possibilities\, online (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Trisia Farrelly of Massey University \nOver 140 countries have now declared support for a global agreement to combat marine litter and microplastics. There are numerous processes underway to build momentum towards an ambitious global plastics agreement at United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) 5.2 in February 2022. This webinar will discuss why a growing number of countries have indicated support for a plastic pollution treaty and what it could look like. Dr. Farrelly is an environmental anthropologist with research expertise in the political ecology of plastic pollution including national\, regional\, and international plastic pollution policy; product stewardship; waste colonialism; and related social and environmental justice. She is co-founder of the New Zealand Product Stewardship Council and the Aotearoa Plastic Pollution Alliance and has been a member of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics since 2017.

SUMMARY:Animal Borne Ocean Sensors – AniBOS: introducing a new Global Ocean Observing System network\, online (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Equipping marine animals with biological and physical sensors is a long-established approach for studying their behaviour\, their ecology and their environment\, and has been producing rich data streams for several decades. A new GOOS network\, the Animal Borne Ocean Sensors (AniBOS)\, aims to coordinate the collection and deliver of marine data into the broader observing network. AniBOS provides a cost-effective capability to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) to monitor essential ocean variables (EOV) and essential biodiversity variables (EBV) in data poor areas\, by providing inputs to estimates of global ocean indicators and quantifying seasonal and interannual variability of the upper ocean state. AniBOS augments considerably observations of temperature and salinity (TS) in the upper ocean provided by other platforms. These are urgently needed for an improved understanding of climate variability and ocean variability. These hydrographic observations also provide a wealth of data on animal movements and behaviour that directly link environmental state and animal performance. This knowledge is essential to develop evidence-based policy protect the animals and their habitats from increasing human activities through improved understanding of their biology and spatial ecology and is a key objective of the GOOS EBVs. Formal recognition of the animal borne ocean sensors network within OCG GOOS improves our ability to observe and understand the oceans and the animals that live in them\, thereby improving our understanding of global ocean and climate processes for societal benefit.
