SUMMARY:Third International Conference on Ecosystem Approach to Management in the Arctic Large Marine Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:The Arctic Council\, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, and the United Nations (UN) all acknowledge that Arctic temperatures are rising faster than any other place on Earth. This is changing the Arctic in visible ways and at an unprecedented speed. Consequences will be far-reaching for marine ecosystems\, and the people and communities that rely on them for their livelihoods and cultures.

SUMMARY:2024 UN OCEAN DECADE CONFERENCE (Ocean Decade Week)
DESCRIPTION:Three years after the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)\, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate achievements and set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. \nFocused on ‘delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’\, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference\, which will be hosted by the Government of Spain in Barcelona from 10 – 12 April 2024\, will bring together the global Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate and take stock of progress\, and set joint priorities for the future. It will be the highlight of an entire Ocean Decade Week taking place on 8 – 12 April 2024 throughout the city. \nAn important milestone on the path to 2030\, the event will cover the full range of Ocean Decade Challenges including critical issues such as climate change\, food security\, sustainable management of biodiversity\, sustainable ocean economy\, pollution\, and natural hazards. \nWith the sub-title of ‘delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’\, the Conference will be firmly anchored in the precepts of the Ocean Decade related to solutions-oriented\, transformative ocean science\, and highlight the role of the Decade as a framework to galvanize diverse groups in inclusive and equitable co-design and co-delivery processes. \nIn view of this goal\, the Conference will include opportunities for the presentation of innovative and transformative science solutions\, in the context of a broader mandate of showcasing initiatives and generating dialogue across the whole science-policy-society interface. It will provide a global forum for governments\, leaders\, maritime sectors\, philanthropy\, universities\, private sector\, NGOs and more\, to meet and catalyse new partnerships and collaborations. \nThe high-level objectives of the Conference are to: \ni. Showcase and celebrate achievements of the Ocean Decade from 2021 to 2024. \nii. Generate consensus on science – policy – society priorities for the Ocean Decade over the next 3 to 5 years through structured dialogue around white papers resulting from the Ocean Decade Vision 2030 Process. \niii. Create opportunities for networking to catalyse new partnerships and initiatives amongst diverse stakeholder groups and to bring new partners to the Ocean Decade. \niv. Provide a global platform for announcements and commitments to support the solutions-oriented goals of the Ocean Decade. \nv. Prepare existing and future Ocean Decade partners and initiatives for a visible and meaningful role in the 2025 UN Ocean Conference and related events. \nvi. Highlight initiatives led by local partners relevant to the Ocean Decade\, in particular in relation to activities related to the role of science in the sustainable ocean economy. \nvii. Raise visibility and awareness of the Ocean Decade and the role of ocean science in sustainable development amongst the general public in Barcelona. \n10 Ocean Decade Challenges\nA key outcome of the Conference will be the publication of a set of white papers related to the 10 Ocean Decade Challenges\, that will identify future priorities for the Ocean Decade to generate the knowledge needed for science-based solutions related to global challenges\, such as climate change\, food security\, biodiversity conservation\, sustainable ocean economy\, pollution and natural hazards. \nThe Conference will take place prior to the 2024 pre-Conference for the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (location and date TBD\, Costa Rica – 2024) and the 2025 United Ocean Conference itself (Nice\, France – June 2025). The Conference therefore provides a unique opportunity to convene and prepare existing and future Ocean Decade partners in advance of these major global convenings. \nHosted by Spain and co-organized with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO)\, the 3-day\, in-person event is co-led with a range of partners: Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council through the Barcelona Capital Náutica Foundation\, and the Spanish National Ocean Decade Committee\, which is led by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).

SUMMARY:The AUV Singapore challenge
DESCRIPTION:The SAUVC competition challenges participant teams to build an AUV that can perform given tasks. These tasks are simulations of tasks operational AUVs would have to be able to perform. The competition is held in a swimming pool and each team’s AUV will have to perform 4 tasks. The speed and accuracy at which the AUV performs tasks will be used to decide the winner of the competition.  \nThe tasks involve four widely faced underwater challenges: AUV navigation\, visual identification\, acoustic localization\, and robotic manipulation.

SUMMARY:UN Ocean Decade ECOP Japan Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Ocean Decade) is an international framework for the sustainable use and management of the oceans using ocean science to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) Network Programme is established to empower ECOPs\, who self-identify as being early in their career in any field related to the ocean. The Programme is endorsed by UN Ocean Decade as a network program. \nAt Japan’s first online ECOP symposium held in January 2022\, ECOPs in various fields such as universities\, research institutes\, and NPOs were invited to discuss their current activities\, challenges\, and expectations for the UN Ocean Decade\, with the aim of igniting to build a network of ECOPs in Japan. \nIn response to the issues identified by the previous symposium and subsequent online survey (e.g. funding\, employment\, lack of mentors\, etc.)\, this hybrid symposium invites ECOPs who are engaged to the seven outcomes of the UN Ocean Decade to discuss how they are resolving issues and carrying out their activities\, and to introduce such examples in Japan. In addition\, through the creation of posters related to the seven ocean outcomes\, ECOPs in Japan will recognize issues and solutions across the different sectors\, and will deepen common understanding among ECOPs toward the achievement of the UN Ocean Decade. \n\nThis hybrid symposium will provide a space for Japanese ECOPs to learn more about the seven UN Ocean Decade Outcomes and hear from speakers regarding concrete activities and initiatives related to these outcomes in Japan. In addition\, the ECOP Japan node will unveil a poster illustrating how Japanese ECOPs view the seven outcomes and what they believe should happen under each of them to achieve the ocean we want. This event will offer an opportunity for ECOPs in Japan to recognize issues and solutions across different ocean sectors\, and help deepen a common understanding toward the achievement of the UN Ocean Decade.\n\n\n\nLink in Japanese: https://www.spf.org/opri/event/20240307.html\n\n\nLink in English: https://www.spf.org/opri/en/event/20240307.html

This opportunity is open for people aged 18 to 30 years old\, who are currently underrepresented in the marine and coastal sector and face financial barriers to attending the Coastal Futures conference. Individuals do not have to be working or studying in the sector currently but must reside in the UK.  \nThe conference is on the 24th and 25th January in London and is one of the largest marine and coastal conference in the UK. This year it is a hybrid conference\, and we are offering two in-person (including accommodation) and two online bursaries. The deadline for both is the 8th of December and offers will be made by the 15th of December 2023. Check out the additional information brochure here for further guidance and a link to the application form. Please do share with anyone who may want to apply.  The outline programme is already available\, and a detailed version will be released very soon so do keep an eye on the Coastal Futures programme page to see who will be talking.
